“Prostrate at the feet of the Lord, she kissed them. Suddenly, she began to sob. She broke the vase and spilled the perfume on Christ’s feet, and her tears were mingled with this unction. Then, unfastening her hair, she let it fall and wiped the Lord’s feet with her locks. In her own fashion and with her style beyond compare, without a word, she had just taken up John’s testimony where he had left off: ‘Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.’”
The Apostle to the Apostles is perpetually remembered for this unique act of her Love for God. Despite all her sins, the Almighty, who exalts the humble and makes saints out of sinners, forgave her and rewarded her by allowing her to be numbered among “the pure of heart” as a consequence of the great sorrow for her sins, her deep humility, and her lively faith — because she had chosen “the better part.”
The public and solemn homage she paid to Jesus was scandalous to the Pharisees. Obviously, Christ knew very well what was going through the Pharisee’s mind as he witnessed Mary Magdalene’s actions, but Christ also knew Mary Magdalene’s heart, and He knew that far from being sullied by such actions of a past (repented) sinner, that, through this contact, it was going to be the penitent who would be solemnly purified. He, the source of all purity, forgave the woman all her sins.
St. Mary Magdalene, pray for us!
