St. Andrew Wouters is proof that though sin might infect us all, we are all still worthy of God’s love. He was a Dutch Catholic priest who broke his vows of celibacy almost daily and fathered plenty of children. He’d always ask for forgiveness, but he’d fall right back down.
On the 9th of July, 1572 – He and 18 other Catholic clerics were rounded up by Militant Calvinists and forced to renounce the Papacy and mostly Transubstantiation, the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
As the rope was placed around his neck, he shouted, “Fornicator I always was, Heretic I never was!” as he was hanged. The Martyrs of Gorkum were beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1867.
St. Andrew Wouters, pray for us!
