St. Ranieri Scacchieri

He was an Italian layperson, also known as St. Rainier of Pisa. He is the patron saint of Pisa and the patron saint of travelers. His name may also be spelled RayneriusRaineriusRainieriRanieriRaniero, or Regnier.

Born between 1115 and 1117, he lived a worldly life as a wandering minstrel and musician, partying all night until he met a holy man. He almost immediately wanted to change. He went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, renounced his wealth, and lived like a beggar. When he returned to Italy, he became known for preaching, healing the sick, and driving away evil spirits.

He never joined a monastery, though he lived among monks for much of his life. He died in 1160 and is patron saint of Pisa. His relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica. St. Ranieri Scacchieri’s feast day is June 17th.

St. Rainerius, you were the musician who was inspired to leave the party scene and give your life to God. Sinful Musician Turned Holy Pilgrim, pray for us!
